i installed GkrellM from fink
and when my OSX starts
it sucks out all the memory (i had 768MB)
and only 338MB left for usage

Is there any way to check what startup items OSX use?
and how to optimize my memory usage?

1. Free memory is wasted memory.

2. Pagein/pageout ratio is a better indication of low physical memory conditions that effect performance.

You can also use Activity Monitor - it might be a little easier for you to understand.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

We really need an FAQ thread with RAM usage entries.

If things are running ok then don't worry about RAM usage. Just use your Mac.

Too many threads about RAM usage and why OS X uses so much.

I don't know how much free RAM I have now and don't give a hoot one way or the other. It works and that's what's important.

but if it runs on RAM
it will keep using my hard disk for swap

that slows everything down
and cause damage to my hard disk

Don't worry about any of this at all. Damage to the hard disk? It was designed to do exactly what it's doing. Do you worry about wear on your pistons every time you start your car?
