After the voters have their say in November, South Dakota's only (and part-time) abortion clinic will have to close its doors. Abortions will be illegal except in the ultra-rare case where the mother's life is in peril.
12 other states will follow their lead.
Life is good. No need to snuff it out.

Hello to South Dakota woman travelling to more open-minded states.
I bet that there are going to be a bunch of news stations covering "missing teens" from South Dakota who pop up in a state where abortion is legal.

Actually say hi to back alley abortions one more time. More women will die in results from those abortions. More children will have no family. More women will be mutilated.
I hope you pro-life people are happy about this.
How many children are you going to adopt?

Next they'll make dancing and drinking alcohol illegal and make women wear long skirts. Also, why do women have to drive cars? Make that illegal too.
Christain fascists at it again.

This narrow-minded thinking really f*cks me off!!
Is it so difficult to understand that if a woman WANTS an abortion, the law is not going to stop her!
As others have mentioned, they will just go to a state/country where it is legal.

And then there's this very interesting perspective on the law, which brings into question whether or not it could get shot down as violating the Establishment clause of the Constitution, as it actually makes the moral judgements of one religion the law of the land, and makes another's illegal.
|
Life is like a clay pigeon -- sooner or later, someone is going to shoot you down and even if they miss you'll still wind up shattered and broken in the end.

The Evangelical right are trying to destroy the lives and the rights of women. This is a proven fact.

Hahaha!, Boy howdy am I glad I live in a progressive state.
Abortions? C'mon down.
Gay and want to get married? C'mon down.
Let the midwest be home of ignorance, I'm glad a few states have enough sack to stand up for the free thinking peoples of this country.
You're a smart man Spliff, you understand this law was passed by hundreds of thousands of backwards jesus-toting rednecks, right?
I LOOOVE how gay marriage was banned in the USA until Massachusetts pretty much nixed that un-constitutional BS.

Am I the only person who thinks that outlawing something in a state in which it hardly ever happens in the first place is nothing to get excited about?

They're not going to adopt. They'll just blame the increased number of orphans on the liberals somehow.

It's legal to kill a person in self defense.

I never heard of that before. So if you are trapped in a room with a blind and deaf person who is unknowningly firing a gun every which way, you aren't legally allowed to kill him to save yourself, assuming there is no non-violent way for you to disarm him?

Becuase you think that Jesus will miracle all these babies away into magical unicorn land?
How is this "era we now live in" change anything for women with no financial means of acquiring qualified medical help when people like you vote to bar any access to it?

If there were no desparately poor kids in families that never wanted them in the first place, then they wouldn't grow up to be criminals. In which case, there would be no one for the "Pro-lifers" to execute self righteously when the time came. This would be a disaster for them.

OK, do you have an argument that isn't retarded?

I'm trying to imagine any other situation where the distinction of malicious intent in some way affects self defense. Apparently any such situation is "retarded." Therefore I suppose the distinction is meaningless (or arbitrary).

You notice the sanctity of life doesn't apply to cancer cells.
You rarely see a bumper sticker that says "Save the Tumors" or "I brake for advanced Melanoma"
So in this system we get to choose which forms of life are sacred, and kill the rest....it's a pretty sweet deal. Know how we got it?
WE MADE THE WHOLE F**KIN THING UP!
Also we invented the death penatly. Sanctity of life AND the death penalty...aren't we versatile?

This all boils down to the simple fact that it is simply no business of the government's what we decide to do with our bodies in this regard (esp. since we aren't hurting others in our decisions).
Old school Republican thinking really is in a deep slumber. It's quite sad.

While I agree that the notion that the government should stay out of our business is old-school Republican thinking, I must point out that the notion this is a state's rights issue is too.

Hmm, except that every survey in that state shows they're probably going to reject the abortion ban. Example: 39% support, 47% oppose.
And in the unlikely event that it is passed by the voters, everyone on both sides of the abortion debate agrees that it's unconstitutional, and will be shut down by the courts immediately. The only chance is that it would be used as a vehicle by the Supreme Court to overturn the abortion status quo, which is extremely unlikely.
Can I hear a smackdown?

I would NOT want to be a young single male living in South Dakota after the ban is in effect. This law basically outlaws slutty chics.

This November's election is going to be quite depressing to the leftwing element.
Perhaps it will used as an opportunity to learn.

Life is good. No need to snuff it out.
This may reduce the number of voters.
Might be good for that state!

Nah.
Would you like to place a bet on the outcome of this abortion referendum in South Dakota? I'll be happy to change my sig for one month to "Spliffdaddy is always right" if the referendum passes, and you change yours to "BRussell is always right" for a month if it doesn't pass.

Spliffdaddy: unless you've been living under a rock, it is pretty clear that the Democrats will pick up a significant number of seats. It may not be enough to regain control over the House and Senate, but one could also interpret this as a sign that that pendulum is starting to swing the other way again.

Those that use this poor argument act is if abortion is not a necessity for some women. That those women have other options. Women should be able to choose the option that works best for them, from a full slate of choices.

Some believe murder shouldn't be one of those options.
She has options before she gets pregnant too.
I would feel differently if most abortions being performed are basically used as birth control.
But hey, I am not for banning abortions all together. Just ones used as birth control, or by women that are repeat offenders.

Sometimes birth control doesn't work. Sometimes people are too stupid to use it because all they got at school was an abstinence program.

deal.
Since it's a 50/50 spread (according to polls I've seen), we're both taking a big risk.

I went to school in the 80s in a pretty darn conservative school. We got taught about protection in the 6th grade. I am sure they do it now at 2nd.

So let me see if I follow:
-Democracy is good
-When Democracy yields undesireable results, it's because people are stupid and thus the government needs to correct it
-Outlawing abortions will cause people to seek out illegal abortions, yet outlawing guns will result in people getting rid of their guns

I personally care whether abortion is illegal or not. I think it's amazing how so many on both sides blow this up to be so much more than it really is. Legal abortions won't destroy the fabric of our society and outlawing them won't either.
My point was that the the pre-Roev.Wade world was a totally different world and that the fear and shame that drove women to back-alley abortions is not, for the most part. an issue anymore. Our society is very different, our young people are very different and there are other options.

That's very clever, but it doesn't alter reality. I like how you turned a position that favors increased government control into its opposite.
