Zoo celebrates virgin birth of Komodo dragons
Scientists unveiled five squirmy black and yellow Komodo dragons Wednesday that were the product of a virgin birth, predicting that the hatchlings offered hope for breeding the endangered species.
Flora, the Komodo dragon, has produced five hatchlings although a male has never been close to her, the proud staff at the Chester Zoo said.
When fully grown to 10 feet (3 meters) long and weighing about 300 pounds (135 kilograms), they’ll be capable of eating a whole pig or deer at one sitting, hooves and all.
Freakin' Awesome.

The first two documented cases, eh? This may sound cheesy, but it reminds me a bit of Jurassic Park. When in an all-female (or solitary) enviroment, they adapt in order to breed. Pretty nifty.

There are some lizards (geckos, I think) on Easter Island (I think) that are known to reproduce asexually in the absence of males. However since there's no male to provide the added DNA, the offspring are genetically identical to the mother.

In other words, they're all female. This does very little in terms of building a breeding population... (Not to mention establishing genetic diversity within the species to maintain evolutionary fitness.)

From wikipedia: 'A chromosome is a single large macromolecule of DNA, and is the basic 'unit' of DNA in a cell.'.
