Pretty much as the title describes. The PowerBook runs fine but the battery indicator calculates charge time forever, and the laptop dies if the plug is removed.

Anyone dealt with this before? Any guesses/suggestions?

Have you tried replacing the battery?

Considering that costs money, not yet.

Terminal lists it as still having good charge capacity.

Terminal could be in error. If you can't keep it on without having the AC plugged in, then I would think it is most likely the battery.

Make an appointment, go see a Genius. Could be the adaptor, could be the battery.

Presuming you've reset the PMU and the PRAM?

Did you look at the "cycle count" in the System Profiler?

Which Powerbook? Which AC adaptor? Is this the original battery and adaptor that came with the machine or others? Need more details...

The power adapter is bad. Happened to my 'Book and a friends. It's not the battery, I promise.

Don't live near an Apple Store (3 hours away), I haven't seen the PRAM reset yet.

Yep it is AC adaptor. My friend who had this happened also had a 1.67 GHz PowerBook.

Good luck on Monday! Keep your fingers crossed that it's the adapter, because that's pretty reasonable: $40 at amazon (you can find bargains at dealmac.com, which is why this link references it)
