Does A Hat Have To Match Your Clothes?

Okay, here's something the Wife and I have been debating about the last couple of days: does your hat have to match your clothes? For example, look at these hats:
One is brown, the other grey. Do you think you have to wear them with matching clothes, or is it permissible to wear them with whatever you feel like, since it's a hat?

I wouldn't use the word must, but I wouldn't ignore their correlation with what you're wearing either. They could definitely drag your overall look down, if you're concerned with that type of thing (which I suspect your wife does).

There should be some sort of relation going on. The solution is simple, buy more hats. That way you've got choice.

Go with grey - it will go with more than the light brown one. Or buy both, as Mastrap kinda suggested.

Must match. A hat is a powerful fashion statement, given that it's functionally unnecessary - so make it count positively, not negatively.
Grey is a much safer bet than brown as far as compatibility goes (and looks less grey, pardon the pun).

Oh yeah, I'm adding to my collection quite rapidly -- it's just that the ones I have now don't totalyl "go" with the shirt I wore, and now I feel naked sans hat.

Define matching clothes please!
I wouldn't say that a brown hat needs brown clothes and a grey hat...
...but of course a hat has to match your clothes!
I'd never wear a cowboy hat with a scottish kilt for example!

I wear a black hat or cap daily during the winter, and I almost always wear black pants, with a beige coat.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

a hat should match as much as your belt or shoes.

That's what i thought/think -- but what if you don't have a visible belt? I think I'm just irritated because the shirt I'm wearing -- which is a kind of reddish-umber -- doesn't match my brown cap.

When you wear a suit, and feel the need to wear a hat, its color should go along with the suit, shoes and belt.
Everything should kinda match.

Don't forget the shoes though. My take is the hat should, if not match, go well with either the ensemble as a whole, the shoes, provided they both don't clash with the rest of you clothes. Unless that's what you're going for.
It doesn't need to be taken to the extreme, and tastes vary. You should feel comfortable in your choice if you're the one clothing yourself.

Yeah, the patchwork cap that's on its way will take care of issues like this. Not to mention the 4 hats I just bought directly from Hanna Hats.
