How can I make a bootable CD?
I thought that if I put the system folder on the CD it could do the trick.But no.Ofcourse I disabled some extension but I don't know.Please help

Need more info. What software you burning with? If Toast, you need to check the option that says "Make Bootable". Can't remember where that resides though...

I am using Toast and it doesn't say anywhere the word bootable.Also on the pdf of toast
on making bootable CD's it only says to copy the system folder.F@#$ them I say!

If you have a valid format selected, then by clicking the Data button a box will come up. In it is a check box for 'bootable'.
A valid System Folder needs to be present (not for option to show, but for the CD to be bootable).
That is with Toast Deluxe 4.1 anyway.

The best way to make a bootable disk is :
create a temporary partition in Toast, copy a system folder onto the temporary partition and drag the partition onto toast ,afterwards click the data button and check make bootable.

Some extensions and control panels need to write information (like prefs files and stuff) when they boot up. These need to be disabled on the bootable CD since you won't be able to write to the CD when your trying to boot from it.

Disable as many control panels and extensions as you can prior to burning the CD. Look at other bootable CD's like Norton Utilities or TechTool and see what they have in their system folder.

No need to shout, you are obviously either not working in the right format or looking in the menu's. Did you create a temporary partition? To create a temporary partition go to the utilities menu and choose create "temporary partition "now copy the system folder from MacOS 9 CD onto the temporary partition. Then take the temporary partition an drop it in the Toast window, now there should be button called DATA , click on this button and mark bootable. This is the case in Toast 4.1

In the utilities menu I have only compare and check aliases which of course doesn't do this thing.SO ONCE AGAIN HELP.

1. Are you using Toast 4?
2. Is it OEM or Deluxe?

It's the standard version which came with my firewire cd-rw.It's supposed to be toast4.1.
But as I see it'more probable that it's toast
-4.1!!

If this is the case, I find it rather stupid, but perhaps the OEM version of Toast can't burn bootable discs... That just seems ridiculous though.

You are using Toast, the non-deluxe version. You just need to create a System Folder that doesn't have any extensions or control panels that write to disk...examine the boot folder on your Apple System Restore disk for examples.

Made a coaster, but on the second try mine worked out ok.

I have deleted as I said some extension but nothing happenned.Probably I left some extension that writes to the disk.

Ok I manged to do the job I wanted.I copied the sytem folder of OS's 9 CD and that did the trick.Now I have a perfectly optimised hard disk.Many thanks guys.
