I believe this is Mac OS 9-related as it only happened when I upgraded to Mac OS 9.
I can't save MS files. The 'Save As' command works fine, but the regular 'save' command (which I assume "updates the file" doesn't work). It gives me a hard freeze.
I tried the MS Combined Updater (and running the 'First Run,' but neither help.
Suggestions and or hints welcome.

I've had the same problem, you can usually get around it by pressing the escape key, it doesn't fix anything though it just means you don't freeze the screen. There are a few other problems as well, have you tried to enter a formula, sometimes you can't just click the cells you want to include into the formula, you need to type in the cell reference by hand.
If I quit and start up again I usually can save a few times before it doesn't work.
Tried reinstalling everything but still no go.
Cheers

Yeah, I do notice other oddities, including
autosum function doesn't work
copy/paste is quirky -- paste function doesn't allow you select single cells.
hmmm...

Turning off VM cured the save files problem and the other oddities.

For what its worth,
Regarding Mac OS 9 and saving Excel files: I have used both methods to save Excel files, Save As and Save, with no problems.
