Hi.

Does anyone know how you can extend the range of an Airport. I have read a couple of things about it, but nothing with detailled instructions.

Has anyone out there done it? Could you let me know how?

I thought I could put an amplifier on the antenna of the base station, but could I leave my powerbook untouched - or does it need a bigger antenna as well?

Any help much appreciated.

Tom

Just get the correct antenna, open up the airport, and plug it into the right port.
Simple as.
Check www.applefritter.com for instructions, but last time I checked, they had removed the page...
Don't know where it is now.
I could do it if I had the airport in front of me, but can't explain it.
I could make instructions I guess - I'll see if I can get my hands on an Airport and a digicam...

Thanxs.

I am planning to open up the Base Station tonight and have a look at it. On the Orinoco sight - (the one for the WaveLAN card) they have a range extended, so I will probably order one of those.

Will I need to make any modifications to my Powerbook? Or will it work fine as it is?

Cool, thanks eep! - I thought they removed that
No modifications will have to be made to your PowerBook

I own the Lucent Range Extender Antenna, and while it doesn't work miracles, it definitely works as advertised. If you have an Orinoco card in a non-Airport Powerbook, you can also use the Range Extender on the Powerbook end and get even farther. Kind of puts a crimp in your portability though...

is the connector on the range extender the same as used on the airport cards?
could an airport card be used in any cardbus slot with the range extender as the antenna?
sorry, don't have either, so i can't try it out myself...
