- Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons.
Popular Mechanics, forecasting the relentless march of science, 1949
That one is actually true! In these days of modern times, most computers weigh less than 1.5 tons.

Look where technology has come in a little under 60 years. Imagine where it'll be in another 60?

A lot of those (like the Western Union one) were perfectly true when they were made: the way the telephone looked at that time, it was useless to them. It was only later installments of the apparatus that were useful.

Some of the other ones (“Guitar music is on its way out”) are just stupid, though.

Gates did not say it.
Wired has an amusing shoot down of this quote controversy:

Although he has said some other ridiculous stuff. Most recently about that infamous iPod killer: The Zune!

My point is still valid. Must have been a bunch of christian crybabies complaining to the mods to get my posts deleted. Cute. If it were a few hundred years ago, I'd have been burned at the stake instead. Some things never change.

A lot of those lack historical context. The one that said that computers in the future will weigh no more than 1.5 tons obviously was referring to the future relative to 1949, when computers weighed more than 1.5 tons. That wasn't a "world's worst prediction", it was a true one, as at some point after 1949 the computer must have dropped below the 1.5 ton barrier.

If some article said in the mid-90s that computers would eventually reach 1 GHz clock speeds, that wouldn't be a "world's worst prediction", even though computers nowadays are more powerful than that.

Oh, and for some off-topicness:

Or... they could just sign on with multiple carriers instead of making exclusive deals with just one of them.

That doesn't shoot it down at all. Gates would not admit to saying that if he did. That doesn't prove anything.

Not that I do believe the myth is true - but that article doesn't disprove it either.

I have never seen an actual source that documented him saying that. Yet there are several quotes of him refuting he said that.

Thus, I choose to believe the latter. This 640 Kb business is like an urban legend.
