I see that the chicken folks just released v2.2 for windows & linux. Anything new coming up for Macs?

Yep, I have changes in the works to relieve memory bandwidth pressure. I believe this will help real-world performance on multiprocessor Macs, but I'll need to verify this on other machines besides my own. (I cannot confirm or deny other Core2-specific goodies in the works. ) I'm still tuning some functions and working out some FLOP-counting kinks, though.

I am now running KWSN 2.2 on both of my PC's, looking forward to seeing what other stuff Alex can come up with for my old eMac.

Hi alex,
great effort with the Chicken 2.2. However, as a side-effect the Windows client is now almost as quick as the 7.1-G5 client. My P4 3.0 GHz takes exactly the same amount of time as my G5 Dual 2.7 GHz machine. Hope you will "correct" this soon

Oops! Just found out the answer, I think to my own question. Looks like it's running 41.8 MFlops vs the "standard" MacPro's 24.5 MFlops.

Thanx, Gecko_r7! Who would have thought... In S@H Classic, I was struggling to stay among the top 10'000.
BTW, those minis have really helped with this regard. Of particular interest may be my Core 2 Duo-modded mini, which is about to break the 2'000 RAC barrier.

If you are the owner of a Mac Pro and would like to collect numbers for a prerelease app, please send me a PM with contact info. Dual-core C2D Intel owners, I already have a machine to test on. Have patience, it shouldn't be more than a couple of days before this app will be ready for you guys, too.
PPC and CD owners, you may have to wait a bit longer, as I have some backporting and testing to do.
E.T, I'm especially interested in seeing how this app performs on your modded Mac Pro...

It's because of you, Alexkan, that I couldn't find my stats today. Why? Because my row changed colour from white to orange. Why? Because your optimized application boosted my daily output tremendously. Thanks for that.
May I suggest that there be a prominent link on the front page of Team MacNN pointing to your applications and instructions for installation. There are several new members here who are not using your apps. I wonder if they just don't know about them or can't locate them.

Yeah, I was trying to read the forums around 6:30 AM PST, and it was molasses. By the time I got to work everything was fine again.

My friend essentially built a x86 machine with two of the quad
core chips and is now running the chicken of angmar's optimized
client on it, these are the 1.6 ghz chips.
See:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_...hostid=3131492
We'll see how he does - he's got 4 gigs of ram in the thing and
his cpu stats reads:
"Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5310 @ 1.60GHz [EM64T Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 7] [fpu tsc pae sse sse2 mmx]"
We'll see if he gets in ET from Tellus neighborhood with it.
His G5 2.0 dualcore is doing fantastically, he's at RAC 1324.39,
better than my dual CPU G5 2.5 which only seems to hit 1300
or above when I go on vacation and run no other apps on it.
I gotta gets me some of that x86 beastliness I think.

Weird. His RAC on his G5 went up considerably after he installed
6.5 gigs of ram in the box (up from 2.5 gigs) a couple of days ago.
Not sure what's going on regarding his WU times on the
big x86 monster - sometimes a work unit completes in 20 minutes,
then some of the others (probably angle units) take longer.
He is running the 64-bit version of Windows XP if that helps
anyone figure it out.
So the x86 Xeon x8 has 2 gigs of ram, the G5 2.0 dual core
has 6.5 gigs of ram.
Interesting.

I would be willing to bet he doesn't have his DIMMs in sets of 4. If he has only 2 DIMMs (regardless of size), performance will be *way* down.

Passing that information to my friend...
His G5 2.0 DC now is hitting about 1350 rac, better than my G5 2.5 DP.
Impressive. Amazing what adding ram did on an already robust machine.

My friends machine is now 82 in the world:
Top computers
Weirdly, right above it is a G5 of some ilk running a different client than Alex's. It says
"Power Macintosh - Power Macintosh [Power Macintosh Model PowerMac11,2] [AltiVec]"
where mine just says "Power Macintosh - PowerMac7,3". I wonder if that's a diffferent
client?
After my G5 blew up my RAC dropped like a rock, now that it's back I think I'm going
to have to run the FFT app to generate a new wisdom file because it doesn't seem to
be doing as well as before and the RAC is in the 800s where it was 1200-1300 before.
New CPUs/Motherboard/Power Supply/Cooling unit. Stay tuned.

I think you are confusing client and application. alexkan's application has nothing to do with what is displayed on that list. The information on that list comes from the BOINC client. The newer versions of the client show more information about the CPU. If you were to upgrade, they would look similar.

I thought Wisdom files were no longer a factor with the later applications from alexkan.

Power Mac7.3 is original G5, with unicore CPU, 400mhz DDR memory and PCI-X bus.
Power Mac11,2 is last revision of G5, with dualcore CPU, 533Mhz DDR memory and PCI-e bus. -> those are much faster in crunching than originals.
Revision numbering comes from motherboard which is totally different generation.

I was running SIMAP for the last few weeks on my Core Duo iMac. Since I came back to Seti, it seems somewhat slower. In particular, when I am paired with a Core 2 Duo which is a little bit higher clock speed, it is completing work units 2x's faster. Is this proper? I have updated Boinc a few times lately, but have done nothing to A Khan's worker.

Your times seem about right for a Core Duo at that clockspeed. It's reasonable for a similarly-clocked Core 2 Duo to vastly outperform your Core Duo, because the architectural improvements in Core2-based chips doubled throughput of the instructions that the SETI worker uses most.

My friends' 8-core machine has been running "Chicken Good" 2.0 up until today, he still was
in the top 60 machines in the world. This ought to be really interesting, he was not aware
of the 2.2b version. Stay tuned.
Well, the G5 is finally close to breaking 1K rac again. Hope it keeps climbing.

Any news on a PPC client upgrade?
I've definetely got proof my current G5 2.5 dual performance is not
quite as good as the last one - motherboard, ps, processors and
cooling system was replaced during the repair last month.
I re-ran the fft3 and it still breaks just over 1100 rac and doesn't dip
into the 1200s like the old one used to although it could be the work
units doing this. I'll keep trying though.

I’m planning to switch a new iMac over to the i386-v7.2-core2 app, and it’s running BOINC v5.8.15, with which I have little experience. From what I hear the recent versions’ changed process-owner or whatever can cause problems with a ‘dropped-in’ executable and app_info.xml. Any tips to offer regarding just what has to be changed in the permissions, and how? Will this require root access?
