I just read the specs on the new iMacs and external displays are only supported with video mirroring. I hope that is a mistake. The previous iMacs supported extended desktop.
Can anyone with a new iMac verify?

No, it's not true.
The tech specs page clearly says it supports both extended desktop and mirroring.

I don't have a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, so I can't confirm or deny this myself, but I spotted this picture on the ArsTechnica unboxing that seems to show the iMac spanning to a Cinema Display on the right (you can make out part of an iTunes window).

Even if you get an iMac and it says that ONLY mirror mode is applicable, don't fret. It's only a temporary glitch. You can download a script that forces the imac to extend desktop to both displays. I don't have the link at the moment, but if someone really needs it I can gladly scrounge and dig up where it was on the net.

no new imac will say it supports only mirror mode, so...
see above posts!

Let's be honest. That will never happen. Don't fret.
