Do you mean after logging in to OS X, or during boot up of OS X? There is a keyboard combo to startup in verbose mode (apple V or V, can't remember), all login items are listed in your Accounts pane.

There is not a whole lot you can do... What kind of things did you have in mind? I'm not sure I understand the purpose of your goals here.

I believe seasurfer would like to better understand the OS X boot-up process, and how it can be modified to improve his boot times. This may help: Mac OS X System Startup

However ... I'd recommend that you don't f*** with the boot process. OS X caches a ton of different things, so boot-up time will be mostly limited by disk performance and hardware initialization. I upgraded my MBP to a 7200 RPM/perpendicular recording drive, and that halved my boot-time.

Apart from password pause, I'm pretty sure my iMac as below, with 10.4.11 starts up well within 15", I'll time it next time.

iMac Intel Core i5, 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 21.5" Monitor 10.8.3.
iMac 17" 2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w 3gb memory (White one) 10.6.8.
Internal 500gb / 8x external HDD's 250GB - 3TB (4x Time Machine)

Under system preferences - accounts - your account - login items - and clear out some stuff from there.

You could check that you have no unnecessary apps booting automatically.
[edit] like iMan G5 just said!

What kind of Mac do you have? a Intel Mac running 10;5 boots incredibly fast.

The easy answer is: don't shut down. just sleep/hibernate the computer.
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

I have iMac 2.8Ghz Extreme with 4Gig of RAM, my boot up time is around 33-34 seconds. I wish it can be done within 15s, is that possible at all?

Just timed mine, as per sig.

15" to password, 5" after password entry, so 20", perhaps even quicker with password disabled.

iMac Intel Core i5, 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 21.5" Monitor 10.8.3.
iMac 17" 2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w 3gb memory (White one) 10.6.8.

Not really, no. Maybe with a faster hard drive.

Turn off any Sharing services and set the time and date manually.

I'm not sure setting the time/date manually will affect startup time. ntpd will start in the background I'm pretty sure.
