This is a feeler, but I will definitely sell it for the right price!
1st Generation 5GB iPod. It is in perfect working order and still plays like the day it came out. It comes with the original box, firewire cable, and wall charger. The original wrappers for all the accessories, the iPod, and from the shrinkwrap around the box are included as well! EDIT: Original 1st Generation iPod earbuds are now included!
Amazingly, it also comes with the original shipping box which has the serial number sticker on the side which matches that on the box and the iPod! It also even has the original shipping information and ship date on the box...it's a bit faded, but still there! It's ship date was 1/26/02!
Cosmetically it is very very pleasing. This is a gem for any iPod collector. The pics below tell the story, but to describe in more detail, it has small hairline scratches on the back and faintly on the front which can be seen at an angle in the light. It is from coming in and out of the case it was in. Nothing drastic, this thing is a beauty! Also, if you look at the back of the iPod at a certain angle in the light, you can see a slight dimple (very slight). You may not even be able to see it yourself in person, but if you try hard enough you can. It's to the left of the apple logo. I just want to make a potential buyer of such a rarity informed in every way possible.
I will post pics in the link below. Feel free to PM me or post.

I would like to get at least $400 for this, but would prefer more.

There is no way anyone would pay 400 dollars for it. Especially on a mac forum, many of us seasoned users have the first ipods. They definitely aren't worth 400. But that's my opinion.

Go for it.
I think you've definitely got the whole "collector's item" thing going for you.
But ebay will probably be more successful
Good luck.

I sold one in lesser condition, with the box & all, for around $215 on eBay, so $250+ at the right time isn't out of the question.

Yeah there's one on ebay right now up to $700! It looks like mine is better for what's actually included!

well, I won't get into it the meat of it, but some of his offers to people selling here have been in very poor taste.

Man, if that ebay auction isn't deliberately misleading, i don't know what is.
Several photos of the outer sleeve, with a small disclaimer that no outer sleeve is included.
Plus, the "original" iPod was not Windows-compatible, right? The one shown is Windows-formatted.
And yes, that hellish auction page looks like a MySpace profile cooked up by a 15-year-old.
Check out the manufacture date, as given by Chipmunk.nl:
Serial number: GQ612050NAM
Model: Mxxxx iPod 5GB Generation=1
Factory: GQ (Remanufactured Model = Refurbished (ipod)) code_to_number: 050 - QT0271Z9HDS
Production year: 2006
Production week: 12 (March)
Production number: 170 (within this week)

Eek...where did you get that info..coconut identy?? Sorrry for the poor example.
FYI, the original iPods were only Mac compatible, but with the newest software version (1.5) they can be formatted for either mac or pc.

Here's the link where you can put the SN in & find out build info:
Klantenservice: Serienummers
For the 5GB on my desk, U223949ANAM:
Model: Mxxxx iPod 5GB Generation=1
Factory: U2 (Taiwan)
Production year: 2002
Production week: 39 (October)
Production number: 4940 (within this week)
Are these accurate?

Hmmm... my MBP was produced in 1997. That makes me concerned.

If I remember there was no 2G 5GB iPod. The 5GB was continued into the 2G family with no changes. Only the 10 and 20 GB 2G's had the new touch wheel.
Apple-History.Com has this to say
In March 2002, Apple added a 10 GB model to its iPod lineup, for $499. Several months later, in July 2002, Apple replaced the mechanical scroll wheel with a solid-state touch wheel, added a $499 20 GB model, and dropped the prices of the 5 and 10 GB models to $299 and $399, respectively (The 5 GB iPod kept its mechanical scroll wheel). In Addition, Apple for the first time made iPods available to Windows users. All models were discontinued in April 2003, with the released of the iPod (Dock Connector).

That's correct. However, the date of manufacture puts it as a 2G.

Date may indicate 2G, but it's a 1G.
Did I mention the wheel? It spins.

The font of the word "iPod" on the back of it tells it all.

Oh yes, I believe you and the seller 100%. But that's not a great resource. It gave the totally wrong date of manufacture for my iMac and PowerBook. My point was, don't base your sale off of that. Sorry for any confusion And I think the 1G iPod's pretty sweet, I have a 2G 20 Gb somewhere.

Sorry, MattyMac.
I jumped on the eBay link discussion that others posted.
Anyway, this is a sweet example of an original iPod in "collector" condition.

Sweet. My 1st gen 5g is in the 2nd drawer of my leftover electronics chest. Completely fried, with scratches all over it.
It had a good life.

Wow, I have a 1G ipod that's almost perfect and I have all the original packaging and accessories. I should try and get $500 for it.
Nah, I'll sit on it and see if I can get $2000 in a couple years.
