With gas prices in the US steadily climbing every day feels like it is the most I have ever paid for a gallon of gas. Then I got to thinking about the tons of products/services I feel like I have been ripped off on in the past and how $4.50 for a gallon of gas isn't such a big deal.
So what is the most you have ever paid for every day items?
$4 for a bottle of water at a baseball game or amusement park? Over $1000 for an airline ticket? How about over $100,000 for a car?

I spent $24,000 for a truck, that's by far my most expensive purchase aside from my house.
I live modestly, so in general I don't pay a premium for every day items. My biggest weakness I suppose is coffee and I spend 2 dollars a day for a cup of dunkin donuts coffee in the morning.

So you basically paid someone 233 dollars an our to assemble cabinets - Wow that's kind of extreme if you don't mind me saying.
I could understand kitchen-aide cabinets or something else but IKEA is designed for the consumer to assemble and then install.

over $5000 for a camera (early Sony DV).
Recently over $3000 for a week at a really nice hotel, which would've been more had I not brought in my own booze. Damn minibar prices are criminal!

I always thought those comparisons about gas prices were kind of silly. News stations like to report that White Out is like $90 a gallon or Printer Ink is $4500 a gallon, so gas prices really aren't that bad after all.
That may be true, but I I don't go through 40 gallons of inkjet ink a month, nor is ink backed by a global supply chain designed to handle hundreds of millions of gallons of the stuff a day.
</Rant>
The most expensive thing I have had to do lately is $2300 bucks to replace a water supply pipe to my house with $30 worth of PEX pipe. Could have done that myself if I had a backhoe.

On my first trip to Dubai, my wife and I were eager to check out the Burj Al-Arab, the 7-star swankiest hotel in the world.
Trouble is you need a reservation to even get in. So we finally got in on the cheapest dinner buffet available. It was still US$300 per and that didn't count drinks or tip.
That said, even being a "low-end" buffet, the food was some of the best, amazing variety and the service was best evah. That and having drinks at the top of the hotel made it money well-spent.

The look on the face of those Chinese people seeing me with lemonade in one hand, cotton candy in the other, puffing on five cigars at once?
Priceless.

What kind of piano is it? I have a Steinway grand piano and it is nowhere near that much. Is it the concert grand or an antique or something?

Yes, all three of those! It's an 1886 Steinway Concert Grand (Model C), Brazilian Rosewood. It's gorgeous. I never paid it much attention until it moved into our house, but it's ornate and monstrous.

Got any pics? It sounds amazing and I hope it is well insured. Do you keep it in tune and play it regularly or just keep it in tune (not keeping it in tune is simply not an option)?
But to keep on topic I spent $600 on a cell phone just last year and now it is only $200. Yea, I know electronics get cheaper, etc., but I had never spent more than $50 on a phone so it was a big adjustment.

Nor is it subject to rampant investment speculation, which is the single major factor driving up prices.

Not necessarily. Watch this YouTube video. Somewhere along the line the people get asked how much they spent on their audio equipment. Some of them spent upwards of € 100,000 on speakers and turntables alone. Fun to look at their wives' faces as they rattle off the amount of money spent.

They're sick. They need treatment. I hope that their families aren't wanting for anything. Funny how one of the guys didn't understand the questions about being crazy, but understood how to give a value to his equipment.

I'm not sure how much my bicycle cost, because I paid for it in little bits, but it must have been well over $3500. And I built it.
But at least I got taught how to braze in the process, and I got wholesale prices on the components. And the frame is one-of-a-kind.

I'd MUCH rather spend that kind of money (if I had it to splurge) on a stereo than on a car.
To each his own, I suppose - but I somehow doubt you'd consider someone "sick" or in need of "treatment" for owning a high-end Mercedes or Aston.

Did you watch the video?
Those people were constantly buying and replacing new, ultra-expensive audio equipment. (Isn't Greece a poor country?)

So? How many people do you know who're constantly fiddling with their cars as a "hobby"?
(And wtf about Greece being a poor country? Large parts of the USA are a "poor country", no?)
