Not a bad ad. The response to Apple's "Get a Mac" has followed the typical MS release pattern.
Microsoft Response v1.0 "Mojave": A complete disaster, an embarrassment.
Microsoft Response v2.0 "Sienfeld": Also a disaster, but got people talking and while not helping matters, at least it did not actively denigrate Vista or it's user base.
Microsoft Response v3.0 "I'm a PC": Finally, usable. Still an attempt to appropriate the ideas of its competition, but most people will look at it and say "It's good enough."

Why do you say the Mojave commercials are a disaster. From what I read the response has been positive.
the seinfeld commercials on the other hand were a disaster. Any point they were trying to make was lost in inane babble.

While a good ad conceptually, and slickly packaged, it does show a lack of humor on the part of microsoft. It's a little like they don't get the original joke and are responding to humor with indignation. It does its job though, taking the air out of the get a mac ads, especially if they run it right after an Apple ad....Apple may have to come up with a new one

I actually like the new ads.
That doesn’t change my opinion about the garbage behind it (company, product) but the ads are quite cool compared to the previous ads from MSFT.
As for the Mojave ads getting positive response, give me a break.
Basing a campaign on the motto “Our product doesn’t suck as much as everyone says it does, let me show you!” is utterly ridiculous in my eyes.

And really, of course Vista would appeal to non-users at first glance, it has all kind of eye candy. WIth a trained professional showing you a few key features and some pretty effects without having to install it yourself or deal with the "Are you sure?" dialog boxes, Vista would actually look pretty good.

I think MS missed the point of the "I'm a Mac" ads. These ads just say "we all use PCs and you should too" to me. Not gonna fall for it.

If I gave an Amiga a nifty update to the UI, I could do the exact same thing Microsoft did with Vista. It wasn't a blind test or anything, it was a guided example. They completely avoided any problems someone would regularly encounter with the OS and only showed choice examples.
It was an informercial for Windows.

I never said it was an actual test. I said that I read some positive comments about this particular commercial. Any commercial is going to be an "infomercial" there's nothing unsupervised and its all cherographed. I still stand by my assessment, that this commercial helped MS more then it hurt them and it was way better then then seinfeld/gates commercials.

I like the ad. I think it's very Poignant and retaliates on Apple's ads very well.
I think (and forgive me if I'm wrong) most of you are missing the point. Many of you have said that Microsoft is saying "you're all the same, and it's good to be the same". What MS is saying is that Apple has branded PCs as boring, nerdy, suits. Microsoft's campaign says people who use PCs are diverse and many.
Furthermore, it takes the negative light off of Vista and puts a positive spin on owning a PC.
I think this is a great ad for Microsoft. It is absolutely better than the Seinfeld/Gates ads (which I don't think ANY of us knew where they were going).

The whole concept is ridiculous.
It would be like the Bicycle Association putting out a series of ads talking about how lame cars are and how cool bikes are... and then 2 years later the automobile council or whatever puts out a series of ads making fun of the bike ads.

Right. And if it came from Dell or Sony the ads would work because they push PC sales.
These ads do nothing to sell Vista or take the negative light off of Vista.
Common consumer opinion is that PCs will run better with XP than the newer Vista. Enough people feel this way that they ask PC manufacturers to still include XP on new machines instead of Vista and some comply. There's Microsoft's problem. PC sales aren't so bad that they need to advertise the platform. They need to convince people Vista doesn't suck.
How do these ads do that? If people buy a new PC many still want it to come with XP.
The Mac ads may push the "PC's are boring" stereotype but they also send the message that Vista is full of all sorts of problems and if people are going to upgrade computers they are better off with Macs since their old familiar friend XP isn't available. The Apple ads are not only selling the image they are selling the superiority of OSX to Vista.

I had to buy a PC recently for work-related programs.
I had to go find an IBM Thinkpad that had XP on it because Vista requires so many patches that it was nauseating.
I do like the MS ads because I like the pun on politically correct ("PC") and they are not the typically boring ads.
What I find interesting is:
1. Gates is now getting more involved with promoting Microsoft now that he's retired (weird timing)
2. Microsoft even feels the need to advertise - they're feeling threatened?
At the end of the day use what is easiest for you and makes you feel most productive.
I still miss my old Lombard/Pismo Powerbooks. They'd be fine for a lot of the things I do casually.

Sales figures and market share would seem to disagree with you.
I work in the industry, I am a Creative Director in an ad agency up here in Toronto. As far as I am concerned MS made a bunch of nicely produced commercials that are without any soul.
The tone is petulant and apologetic at the same time. Like many ads created to push a mediocre product they hide their lack of substance behind a slick production. It's turd polishing, pure and simple.
Apple's ad on the other hand work because they have a good product behind them. That simple fact allows them to be arrogant, funny and relevant all at the same time.

The PC admins at a job site are so distrustful of their systems, that they were shocked at the fact that I store my files on my Mac and not on a remote server*.
They were "aren't you afraid of losing your work when you're system dies?"
-Everything- they do is stored directly to a server.
Imagine living in a world where you're this afraid of your own computer.
(*of course, I do backup my work.)

I used to work for a company where I HAD to use Enterprise and the whole Remote-Login Windows Blah Blah Roaming Profiles and everything that I did was stored on the server.

We use Macs at work and all of the work created lives on servers. It makes it easily accessible by everybody, it standardizes resources and it keeps data save. Makes perfect sense to me.

I bought Parallels so that I could do the Exchange thing on my MacBook Pro.
Much rather use that than the HP that was given me when I started working there.
