What do you think of this announcement? Will you be using Messages? Do you think that Facebook has the future of email pegged?

I concur with Spher.
Although in a few month's time it will be amusing reading all the news stories about people whose email has been laid bare for everyone to see because the privacy settings changed without warning.

What's new? Didn't Facebook messages already exist?

Yeah, I think some of you guys are conflating your feelings about Facebook (which I share) with this idea. If this idea is a strong one, it will probably ultimately exist even if it means that somebody else will provide the service.
The question is, leaving the provider out of the picture, do you like the idea?

Aside from the facebook email service, the seems utterly pointless. You can already see your facebook messages and chats at a glance from the home screen.
Facebook texts are simply annoying (326-65: JANE DOE HAS SENT YOU A MESSAGE AT 19:34: You are invited to come see my terrible band pla. . . REPLY WITH "N" FOR MORE OF THE MESSAGE)
As for facebook "email," adults and college kids won't use it, and tweens are too retarded to know how to use email.
It's doomed I tell you!

I use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends (not random people I never met). I won't be using anything that isn't already part of what I'm already using.

It's too different from email to use as email (no subject line, no CCs, etc.), and I am not on Facebook enough to care if it shows up in my message stream. So, I won't be using it. And I definitely don't want another large email provider coming into play and incorrectly labeling my business emails as spam.

There is an interesting development playing out with this.
This is of course purely anecdotal, but the amount of email I receive, in a business setting, is steadily decreasing and is being replaced with a mixture of messaging applications, including Facebook.

What kind of knobheads send business messages through Facebook?

All sorts of corporate entities have decided to have a presence on facebook, twitter, etc. Predictably, all sorts of messages of all types are communicated via this means.
oh. On topic.
I don't care. I like my email in my email and my texts in my texts. I don't care to have a third party service combining them for some reason.

My work is on Facebook, I help with setup of some of our pages, but I don't want my coworkers on my friend list. I don't want to filter that way. LinkedIn is for work.

This is a good way to put it. People use different means to contact different people. There are tons of people on my facebook who I know don't have my phone number or email, and I'm perfectly happy with that arrangement.
This seems to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Maybe it will appeal to someone.

For all of the consternation over Google/Microsoft/Yahoo data mining email (rightfully so), it is going to be interesting to see what Facebook does. They seem to be far more eager to brush up against and go over that privacy line.
