I was wondering when someone would start a thread about Skyrim. I can't wait. I loved Oblivion and this looks to be A LOT better in every aspect.
I've got it preordered from Amazon for delivery tomorrow. I know what I'll be doing this 3-day weekend.
Glad I finished my first playthrough of Dark Souls earlier this week. Then again, I also took advantage of Amazon's Buy 2 Get 1 Free on select games. Picked up Batman AC, Rage, and Battlefield 3. Lots of gaming to do this holiday season!

The number of amazing games that have come out in Q4 of 2011 is astounding.

The guy in the shop where I buy my games said that he'd never seen such a fuller end of year for releases. I still haven't got my copy - need the English Edition, and the Frog postal service is shite.

Quite possibly the best graphics in a video game i have ever seen, specifically the organic worlds (as opposed to industrial worlds).

On what platform? PC? I was at a friends today and he has it on Xbox and PC. The PC version is incredible, especially the water.
I also had a little go on the Xbox. Very very Fallout 2-ish. I haven't even gotten out of the dungeon in the beginning, but so far its pretty good.
HOWEVER : why oh why oh why when I can grab an axe that takes 18 months to swing, that deals out more force than the Hiroshima bomb, must I pick the fookin locks on doors. OMFG do I hate trying to pick locks.

I;ve just seen it on reviews and walkthrough videos online. I like the trees, attention to detail, depth-of-field effects, etc....
It's not the kind of game i will play cause i barely have the time/motivation to do so.

Seeing a couple play-throughs on TWiT sold me.
My plan is to just hang out there sandbox style, and not follow the main quest unless it grabs me. I'm realizing pressure to finish games wrecks it for me, not to mention I don't end up finishing them anyway.
I've more or less stopped playing games because of it, and not hanging out in here because it'd just make me sad I'm not much of a gamer anymore.

Don't sell yourself short, I have the same problem in RPG/Adventure games. I just want to make sure that I can defend myself properly and heal quickly and then I'll be wandering around like a hobo.

I'm only a level 3, but I have a feeling that this game is going to be the most played over the next few weeks/months. I can fully understand why and how Fatty spent days and days in Fallout 2 and 3. You can certainly see elements/good ideas taken from Fallout, Fable and even Red Dead. There should be a health warning about the time that you'll spend playing it.
I've done Unbound, Before the Storm and just about to finish Bleak Falls Barrow. Where are others in their quest/s?

It seems the UI for Skyrim is complete and utter sh!te.
I've been increasingly bothered by terrible game UI recently. Maybe it's all crap because everyone uses ScaleForm (i.e. Flash) for their UI now.

Yeah even on the Xbox the menus aren`t great. I wonder how often people need to equip stuff though. Favourites are well done.

The Bleak Barrow quest is where I decided to stop the main mission. Helping out the little town grabbed me, having a guy act like an elitist jerk-ass (the court mage), didn't.
It's actually pretty liberating to go around and not feel compelled to talk to everyone.

Every game has terrible UI any more. It's the only thing given less attention than a single-player campaign in a multiplayer game.

I'm sure it WORKS, but even on a console it's shite compared to anything else - even Oblivion, which was annoying.
OTOH, we can mod it...

Now that I've got THE SHOUT (killed my first dragon), I'm going to do some side missions and wander a bit more. I need money to get a house so that I don't have to carry 17 books around everywhere.
Has anyone found a place that buys armour and weapons anywhere near the estimated value? I know that I can develop my bartering skill, but I'd like to at least get half-price for the armour I'm selling, especially when you see the buyer/seller adds over 1000 (if not more) gold pieces to sell it back to you.

If it's anything like Fallout 3, the economy is so broken it isn't worth it. You'll soon enough have more money than you know what to do with, and have found cooler stuff than what's available to buy anyway.
Edit: OTOH, you can always put a bucket over someone's head and rob them blind.

My severe gaming ADD is strongly working on me to buy this game, but I'm fighting the urge so I can finish other games and pick this up after a price drop.
Who knows? Maybe Amazon will offer it as one of their deals.

Dedicated gamers or pure stupidity?
=====================
I don't need to buy anything, except a house. But all the equipment that I find and then try to sell later isn't growing the gold coins fast enough. I need 5000 and I'm not even half way there.
Level 6 now. Anyone tackled a giant and/or mammoth? From what I've read, they're some of the toughest opponents in the game. I need a tusk but you can't seem to get one from a mammoth skeleton.
Nice to have a companion, who seems like a pretty good fighter. Not bad looking either.

Haven't played Skyrim yet (have been travelling), but in previous ES games, it was about two things:
* Repair status. Worn things got their prices reduced by the worn percentage, so something that was in 25% condition got only 25% of the max value. The shopkeeper would then automatically repair it up to 100%, which had a big effect on the sale price.
* Mercantile skill. In Oblivion there was haggling, and you need a pretty fair amount of skill to be able to get anything close to 100% of the base price
So your sale price was base*condition*haggling, and your purchase price was base*(2-haggling) This could cause some pretty terrible differences if both condition and haggling were low.

Walked up to one to see if I could talk to him...
He didn't want to talk. Killed me in one hit.

Impossible to focus on quests. You start wandering towards the area to complete your quest, you have a giant (or 2) with a mammoth, (or 2) in your path. You go around said giants and mammoths. You spot a building. Which is part of a small town, which turns out to be attached to a large city. You wonder around the large city.
2 hours later you've sold some stuff, updated your map and talked to shitloads of people. Oh yeah, you now have 25 new quests.

It's sad when I am on live to see more people playing BF3 than Skyrim. Skyrim is an amazing game.

Exactly, a game like BF3 or MW3 is best to play at the height of popularity. I fully plan on playing Skyrim, but what about the game will be less engrossing if I wait 5 months?

I don't have the time to put 20+ hours a week into a game so competitive shooters aren't any fun for me.

Sorry, I just don't find it enjoyable to have a K/D ratio of 1:100. Especially now with all the perks and stuff that become available to longer you play.

That's cool, and I understand that, but that doesn't make seeing people play BF3 "sad."

Games like MW3/Madden/BF3 usually lack true innovation or imagination from year to year, so it bothers people who appreciate finely-crafted games like Skyrim (I'm going off reviews and the opinions of others) that they sell through the roof and draw players in for a year at a time, if not more.
But these games sell so well for a reason -- people want to shoot other people on the Internet, and they want to get drawn in to the familiar comfort of titles like Madden. They find a way to hit the least-common denominator (people who buy maybe a game or two a year) and the hardcore crowd that wishes to perfect a title.
If I didn't have a child with colic, I'd be spending a good 8-15 hours a week on MW3 during the holidays, but you'd better believe I'll be spending 100+ hours with Skyrim when I eventually get it. Here's still hoping for an Amazon deal.

I also enjoy participating in the social aspects of the game. Most nights I can find at least a few of my friends on and enjoy camaraderie in bathing noobs in their own blood. I really don't care for playing it alone (Which obviously will never be the case with a single player game).
