I dunno. I remember one of our regulars being called on by the Secret Service for threatening the president, but that wasn't Mr. "Sixteenth-Chapel" Zimph.

Hard to prove or disprove today. wlonh has been deceased awhile. Vehicle accident in Tijuana or Baja if I recall correctly. After leaving us, he worked for Macupdate for a few years. I remained in occasional contact.

The stupid people will tell you that it was over-moderation of "strong personalities" that killed the forums. Except it was the mods telling assholes to stop being assholes, but assholes don't think they're assholes, they just think they're being honest and blunt and suddenly they're the victims when people react poorly to their being assholes.
I was reading through some older threads and there are a lot of people from those threads that I miss - design219, SpaceMonkey, Dakar, Oisin, and more. None of them were assholes, and none of them were pushed out by over-moderation, they just moved on to other things as people have always done. But in the last 10 years all online activity has moved to Facebook, Instagram, and other forms of social media so we don't really have new people joining forums for fun anymore. On top of that, manufacturers have figured out that they can set up their own support forums and get other end users to do their tech support for free, so general tech support forums aren't really needed either. Every forum everywhere is dying, it's not just this one and it's not due to anything other than old age and natural attrition.

Hey man, I knew everything when I was 18. Weird how when you get older you realize you know less.
Definitely still 100% sure Laminar is a ****ing asshole tho. I admire your ability to be such a huge ****ing cock without breaking any rules, because I just say **** you and get banned.

I know. You just don't get a good long read or a super detailed and forensically dissected argument on the FB do you. Sad. The socials have their place but so do places like this.

I am forever annoyed on FB by the neighborhood groups for certain topics... where there is no threading and no one searches, and so every couple days someone starts a new thread "recommend a plumber" etc.

Idealistic, and unrealistic. Even Rand died on social security. People need a safety net, not just the single moms/old people, but if you get sick and go bankrupt paying medical bills. GF got breast cancer 2.5 years ago. Even with insurance, the out of pocket costs were absolutely staggering. This goes into a whole different discussion, but Atlas Shrugged is like an ultra simplified version of what could theoretically be possible, the problem is a large percentage of the population are morons..... that also have the right to live decent lives.
Now if we go into eugenics so dumb people stop breeding and cease to exist I mean that's another convo too, I guess.
Idk. I'm glad I read it. I think anyone who worships it is a moron, just like any other religious person. I think of that quote.... for every complex problem, there is an answer that is short, simple, and wrong.

Its infuriating with car groups. It's the same question over and over, and I can spend 20 minutes writing a detailed response, but why bother, it will just disappear into the void forever in 24 hours.
Luckily we still had car forums.... but then photobucket ****ed up most of those when they changed all the links/accounts to paid.

My memory is vague too, I just remember complaining that we need a POL lounge after the bush/gore election and everything turning political, and being pretty loud whenever politics entered a thread and ruined it.
