In case anyone else had this problem, it turns out it was due to a Safari-update incompatibility issue with a third party plug in (in my case Safari Plus).
I had a similar problem after upgrading to 10.4.10. Did you install any add-ons to Safari (e.g. SafariStand, SafariTidy, etc.)? Here's my posting and solution.
