Even using the source and finding the url to the wmv file doesn't help.

In the case of 'Money for nothing" it is either

http://62.118.252.135:80/media/clips80/124.wmv

or

http://realaudio.aradio.ru/media/clips80/124.wmv

neither works. Just gives some crap .wvx file (0.1 kbyte) and WiMP craps out. What a crappy player.

cheers

And I just tried with Firefox under Windows, and I don't get any "Save As" options... bummer. Some of those videos are real masterpieces (starting out with Money for Nothing...)

Yeah and most are in MPEG format instead of el-crappo WiMP. What is it with some people and their WiMP fetish. Everything is better than that utter POS.

MP4 or H.264 and both are FREE. WiMP streaming server software costs money. I don't get it.

Windows Media Player comes with Windows, it's free, it's "easy to use" and requires very little thought for the person using it. Doesn't that sort of cover all the bases?

Yes except the one I mentioned that costs money. The server software is not free for WiMP. QT streaming server software is free. I can understand why individuals encode WiMP files but when small operations or individuals choose to use WiMP streaming software they must be pirating it or have too much money on their hands.

I agree, compared to H.264/MPEG4 but Real does make a far better player for the Mac than Microsoft does with WiMP. In the end it doesn't matter that much, but at least it is a nice gesture. The Realplayer for Windows is arguably worse because of the crap it installs in Windows while it is far cleaner on the Mac installing just the app and a plugin for the browsers.

H.264/MPEG4 is so rediculously superior to them both it is amazing to see anyone pick WiMP or Real for their media. The QuickTime player could be better - even for the Mac, but it isn't necessary to view H.264 encoded media anyway so it doesn't enter into the equation like the others with their proprietary encoding and formats.

As an 80s enthusiast I would never discgrace my music by encoding it in any other format than the best available at the time.

cheers

W-Y, do you have any real sources for good quality 80s music videos? All of the DVDs I can find are from the last two years or so of music...

Unfortunately, no. Not really. Only the obvious ones.

I've got a few of DVDs with music videos from bands like Wham!, Duran Duran, Mike Oldfield (live), Dire Straits, Madonna, Queen (live) + some others and then I've downloaded some passable MPEGs of various artitsts. Most in 320x200 (about 25MB to 35MB) but I'd rather own them in DVD quality.

Stores like FNAC carry a wide selection of music DVDs over here and specialist stores too and I buy DVDs when I see something interesting.

On the internet it is hit and miss. I keep one eye on the torrents and another on Direct Connect but one never knows unfortunately and I don't know of any free http based places where one can get 80s videos. Excepting the one above but 10 MB wmv files are not that tempting to keep, although interesting to watch once in a while.

cheers

Yeah, "hit or miss" really sums it up for my Internet investigations too. I had expected that a number of 80s acts would still have fan bases that would support not only "Best of" compilations CDs but compilations of their videos, too. Sigh... I guess not.

Well, until recently videos have been difficulkt to obtain in digital format while CDs have been aroun since '85. I think that in the next very few years much of the current DVDs that are on the market are going to be available on-line.

The best thing is of course to buy the DVD whenever possible and one can get a fine price for some. From €4 to €10 easily. €18 for the new releases but I find music DVDs to be cheaper generally than movie DVDs.

Good luck on your search!

cheers
