I purchased a used iPod (mini) from my son's friend. It has his name on it, and of course his tunes. Questions. 1) how do I make the iPod "mine" that is, how do I reset it so that when it turns on, it's in my name? 2) is there a way I can keep the tunes on it but start a new music library?

Get a Dremel and carve your name in the back. That way when it starts up it will display your name. It reads the name with the sensors in the iPod's case.

Thanks. Didn't really intend to steal the music, just thought I'd ask the question. I'm an iPod newb. So, I guess I really need to reset the entire iPod. How do I do that?

Well stated. That wasn't even a well-phrased joke.

I'd find out whether the original owner wants to "give" you his music files before I got too excited about keeping the music on the iPod you purchased. That's the legal way to go about it.

Changing it to a factory-new state is as simple as performing a "restore" using either iTunes or the iPod updater standalone software. That does reformat the drive on the iPod, deleting all the music on it, but that's the issue mentioned above.

To restore, just download and install iTunes 7. Plug-in your iPod and you will find out how.

No problem. Glad to help. BTW, if you don't need the music, you need "Restore" instead of "Reset". Reset is just like pressing the reset button on your computer.
