USAA has a great new service: Deposit@Home.
You scan your checks and they get deposited the same day. No need to send in check by mail.

Ready. Enter the amount of the check and select the account to receive the deposit.

Set. Endorse your check with "For deposit only to USAA FSB account number [your account number]." Then follow the prompts to scan the front and back in two easy steps.

Done. Deposits received before 8:00 p.m. CT on a business day are credited that same day; deposits received after 8:00 p.m. CT are credited the next business day.
Tried it yesterday for the first time, worked great
Just brilliant. That's what I call customer service.

I had no idea this was legal.

I have often had a check sit on my desk for months simply because I was too busy to deposit it or remembered to go when the bank was open.

The only downside I see is that I can't stand using scanners.

Doesn't work with Macs, right? I've been excited about it, but their site says "Mac support coming soon".

Did you use Parallels or Boot Camp or (gasp) a PC?

Virtual PC. Worked like a charm, even on my slow G4 mini.

Well, all the bank would do is scan the check and then submit the EFT electronically.

I'm sure they are not keeping paper copies of all the checks. The have it fiched somewhere. So essentially, you are just doing their scanning job.

I think the real electronic transfer of funds between banks started up a year or so ago. I remember something about it in the news. Before they had to send the paper checks? I can't remember exactly what the story was. Anyone else remember?

I heard a couple weeks ago that some ATMs will soon just scan and then destroy checks when you make a deposit, eliminating the need for the deposit envelope.

Maybe, in 20 years, the US will be at the standard of Europe in 200); no more checks, all electronic transfers at no cost.

Gotta hate checks. Quite an inefficient way of transmitting money.

The law is called Check 21. It gives scanned images of checks the same legal standing as hard copies.

I have been doing this through Parallels but I am eager for Mac support. Any work arounds?

Schon klar, Alter.

Aber mach den Amis mal klar dass sie banktechnisch noch im 19 Jahrhundert sind. Glaubt dir ja keiner

True that. Ich kann mich nicht einmal mehr daran erinnern wann ich in DE zum letzten Mal einen Scheck ausgestellt habe ... das ist mindestens schon 20 Jahre her. "Überweisung for president", or something like that.

Ich habe in meinem deutschen Leben nur einmal einen Scheck benutzt, aber mehr aus Jux, weil ich wissen wollte, ob das wirklich funktioniert. War aber auch im letzten Jahrtausend.
