I hope this is the right forum for this. Forgive me if it is not.

If you look at the chart on the side of this article you'll see Apple has reached a 7.6% marketshare, about double from what it was back in 2004.
Thats pretty awesome and amazing if you ask me. Not that far away from 10%.

Are they using the retail only figures, which exclude Dell and other mail-order-only brands?

Agreed, we'll remember these as the "good old days"! Oh well, maybe the hardware will get cheaper...

Apple use to have something like 15% of the market back in the late 80's, seems like thats where they are headed

Remember, though, that included both Apple ][ and Mac sales. Mac market-share has never reached 10%.

I’d shut Apple down and give the money back to the shareholders.

Apple will go out of business because they have missed out on the most important trend: turning your computer into a big ass table with MS Surface.

Not that I disbelieve these numbers at all, but I always tend to question their methodology. There just doesn't seem to be a great and bulletproof way to collect this data accurately, especially not based on sales alone.

Does this mean I can't call them "beleaguered" anymore?

Whoa, that's a big jump, isn't it? Last I heard it was about 5%.
The market share is nearly 10% if you exclude non-retail, like Dell and some HP, so the 7.6 would be too low. Could it really be true? It's amazing to watch it jump from year to year, and now quarter to quarter.

The halo effect? Still.. I seem to remember seeing Steve Jobs claiming marketshare was about 3% in an interview less than a month ago.
I like "almost 8%" Mac marketshare, though so I'll just conveniently ignore Steve

And? I don't see the big deal. With the switch to Intel, it would only be logical to assume that they would gain marketshare. Also, with the release of the new MBP with the nVidia card, gamers are starting to switch as well. I was just talking to someone I game with last night that already ordered a MBP because the vid card is DX10 compatible. Even though he will run XP more often than OSX, the vid card, speed, power and style of the MBP sold him.

Its a big deal. What you just said was reasons for the gain in market share. The switch to Intel, better hardware, rapidly evolving OS, all were strategic decisions by Apple to make money (ie - gain market share). Of course its logical to assume they'd gain market share by making strategic moves to gain market share.

I should have rephrased that. My mistake.
I don't see why it's unexpected for this to happen.

Ahh yeah, I don't find it surprising or unexpected at all either. I would have found it surprising if they hadn't gained any market share, or lost some.
And now with the iPhone, I suspect even more market share to come.

That's one of the major reasons why I like seeing Macs gain market share. Computers are just so expensive. Also if Macs become more of the majority then more companies will have to provide better support for Macs. I hate how some companies have just ONE qualified person to answer our questions but of course they have a legion of PC support staff. I can't really blame them since Macs are in the minority but it can be frustrating.

Ways to inflate Mac marketshare:
1) Look at US only instead of worldwide
2) Count the "home" market only and exclude "business"
3) Count only retail sales, to exclude Dell and other mail/web-order companies
Combine all 3 and you could probably get the figure up into the double digits.

And that one qualified guy is really just a PC guy who has the experience of installing OS X two or three times.

Maybe it's consumer desktop marketshare, and not the marketshare they calculate on all sales (even enterprise servers, ATMs, cash registers, etc.)

1) I somewhat agree but only US, Japan and UK should be counted, not other countries due to lack of accurate methodology
2) Home and Business marketshare should have been separate from the beginning anyway. You want to count in vendor machines that use Windows too?
3) Who else than Dell have big impact on marketshare?
