Before we get started, let me be clear - I'm going through all this figuring because I want to see if I can slip Illinois into a BCS bowl somehow. So here's a break down of the situation as of today (and before Kansas vs Missouri).
SEC
1 LSU (L)
7 Georgia (W)
12 Florida (W)
18 Tennessee (W)
Big 12
2 Kansas
4 Missouri
10 Oklahoma (W)
13 Texas (L)
Big Ten
5 Ohio State (Idle)
17 Illinois (Idle)
Big East
3 West Virginia (W)
20 Connecticut (L)
Pac 10
6 Arizona State (L)
9 Oregon (L)
11 USC (W)
ACC
8 V. Tech (W)
14 Boston College (W)
16 Virginia (L)
WAC
15 Hawaii (W)
19 Boise State (L)
So here are the BCS Bowl Games and their affiliations:
BCS Championship: None
Orange Bowl: ACC
Rose Bowl: Big Ten vs Pac Ten
Fiesta Bowl: Big 12
Sugar Bowl: SEC
(Big East gets one of the at large bids)
Based on how everything has gone this week, here is how I think the new BCS standings will look:
1) Kansas/Missouri winner
2) West Virginia
3) Ohio State
4) LSU
5) Kansas/Missouri loser
6) Georgia
7) V. Tech
8) Oklahoma
9) USC
10) Florida
11) Arizona State
12) Boston College
13) Hawaii
14) Tennessee
15) Illinois
So if everything shakes out the way I think it will given that:
1) The winner of Kansas/Missouri loses to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game
2) West Virginia takes care of Pittsburgh
3) LSU beats Tennessee in the SEC championship game
4) Virginia Tech beats B.C. in the ACC championship game
5) USC defeats UCLA
6) Arizona State defeats Arizona
7) Washington defeats Hawaii
Then the final BCS standings would like the following:
1) West Virginia
2) Ohio State
3) LSU
4) V. Tech
5) Oklahoma
6) Kansas/Missouri winner
7) Kansas/Missouri loser
8) USC
9) Georgia
10) Florida
11) Arizona State
12) Illinois
Being top 12 would make us eligible for a BCS bowl. There would be 3 SEC teams in the top 12, so Florida won't get in. And the Big 12 would have 3 teams in the top 12, so the Kansas/Missouri loser won't get in. Therefore, Illinois will end up going to the rose bowl, where they will surprise USC.
I really need to stop drinking on Saturday nights...

OSU and Illinois are in the Big Ten. You left the Big East teams out completely (although WVU is the only one that will go to a BCS game).

Yes they are - I mistyped what I had written down in another program first... unfortunately I did it in column form, which doesn't paste very well.

We'll probably be in the Fiesta Bowl. they've mentioned us a few times in their conference calls -- we're also one of the hottest commodities in Div-1A (FBS or whatever the **** they are calling it now) after the win over tOSU. If tOSU makes it to the national championship game I could very well see us going to the Rose Bowl as tradition dictates that its a PAC 10/Big 10 game and Michigan is not a very hot property right now.
If we don't go to a BCS bowl then we'll be in the Capital One Bowl against Tim Tebow and co. That'll be a hard matchup.

We got a bowl invitation today...It's to the PapaJohnsPizza.com bowl in Alabama. It's a bowl at least. We're going to play someone from the Big East.
Also this year is our 14th straight winning season. Go Black and Gold.

If you go park downtown and catch a bus to Lesion ..I mean Legion Field. You don't want to be walking through the neighborhoods around the stadium.

Just wait until one of your teams has the misfortune of being invited to the Independence Bowl that takes place in Shreveport (neighboring city). Venture a few hundred yards from the stadium and you'll be assaulted by maniacal crack addicts.
That's why I never attend the State Fair around here. Same place.

Even more brutal: the idea of a Missouri/West Virginia title game.
Seriously, who's going to be watching that (besides M/WV fans)?

I think Oklahoma will knock off Mizzou in the Big 12 title game, so it'll make a for an even bigger mess. Improbable as it may sound, I think we'll see a WV/Ohio St. Title game.
Even more strange, if Pitt can beat WV (unlikely), we could see Ohio St. play Georgia, even though Georgia didn't even win their own division in the SEC. Though, it probably would be the best matchup for TV ratings.
This is so screwed up, we desperately need an 8 team playoff. As it stands, there's no way for the BCS to pick the 2 best teams in the nation this year. They might as well just put all the names in a hat and draw 2, it would be a better system than they have now.
My idea? Choose the champion from each major conference (SEC, Pac10, Big10, Big12, ACC, Big East), and then take the 2 best "at large" teams from all the other conferences, and have a playoff. You could use the BCS formula to figure out the seeding, and then play 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5.
Damn, that would be fun to watch!

At least there are some casinos in Shreveport. I remember bowl games were held in places that had some other attraction other than the game itself. Now they have bowl games in places like Detroit and Boise, ID.

I'm in favor of a playoff system, but would one of those "at large" teams really deserve it? Think about the SEC this year; Florida, LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee all could've been in the national championship game and made a game of it against a Ohio State, West Virginia, Kansas, etc. But only one from the SEC? Pac 10? Big 12? All of those conferences have several really good teams.
I guess there's no PERFECT way to do it, but your way seems the best. And think of how important it would make every conference's championship. However, I think conference's that don't have conference championship games would need to start, even if they aren't split up into West/East or something similar.

The casinos are a big draw for out-of-towners (I can't believe I actually used that term), but there's not a lot else. They've been shooting a ton of movies here, but that's not actually a tourist attraction.
Bossier City (this side of the river) is a great place to live, but it's not much of a tourist spot for the non-gambling types. I'm not even sure how the Independence Bowl came here in the first place.

Holy ****! Everything just went crazy. Plus, I kinda almost called it!
Mizzou = dead
W.V. = dead

It's very possible we'll now see Georgia and Ohio State in the title game, and Georgia didn't even go to their conference title game! This is so insane. By now, surely the NCAA can see how screwed up this is.
We need a playoff system!!

I really hope Georgia goes to the National Championship. They keep talking about LSU going and "leap-frogging" all of the teams in front of them just because they won the SEC championship. If that happens I'm going to be pissed. Go Dawgs!!

The NCAA didn't really learn anything after the '04 season. I doubt they'll change after this one.

Everyone wants a playoff system.
And LSU isn't "leapfrogging" Georgia because of the SEC championship. Georgia and Tennessee both had two losses. Tennessee beat Georgia in October (a 35-14 blowout, by the way). Tennessee goes to the SEC championship, and gets beat by LSU.
LSU comes out on top of the SEC, definitely one of the top three (I'm trying to appease the Big 10 and Pac 10 supporters) conferences in the country. It's as simple as that. Did you want a three-way round robin for the SEC championship? On what grounds?
LSU might not deserve to be in the national championship game by some standards, but Georgia sure doesn't.

The BCS system sucks, and everyone knows it. It's a broken, failed system, but people are right when they say that no system will be perfect. If it's an 8-team playoff, the 9th team will be POed. If it's a 16-team playoff, the 17th team will cry foul.
Still, I completely agree with the idea of an 8-team playoff.

Yeah, but if you've only done enough to be ranked 9th, you haven't done enough to be considered for the national championship.

That's as true as it gets, if you're not in the top 8 you have no business screaming, even if you're #9.
Well, it looks like the pollsters have decided to jump LSU all the way from 7th to 2nd, poll-vaulting (heh) all the teams in front of them, even after a weak effort against a, supposedly, inferior Tennessee squad. No, LSU isn't the 2nd best team in the nation, as it currently stands, given their injuries and mediocre play, Georgia would destroy them right now.
I do love the situation, though, it shows how much of a sham the BCS truly is. Maybe it'll cause enough chaos to make the NCAA realize that any type of playoff is better than the current steaming pile of horse ****. The 2004 season was bad, but this season is far worse. I guess we should all be happy, in many respects, however. We finally have something that most college football fans have been dreaming about for decades, true parity in the sport.

Hawaii should just be happy that they're even going to a BCS bowl, considering their abysmal schedule.
09/02 N Colorado W 63-6
09/08 at La Tech W 45-44
09/15 at UNLV W 49-14
09/23 C Southern W 66-10
09/29 at Idaho W 48-20
10/07 Utah St W 52-37
10/12 at San Jose St W 42-35
10/28 New Mexico St W 50-13
11/10 Fresno St W 37-30
11/16 at Nevada W 28-26
11/23 #19 Boise St W 39-27
12/01 Washington W 35-28
They played ONE top 25 team all year. I will give them props though, going 12-0 is quite a feat, given their god-awful defense. Plus, using the system I posted above, they would be in an 8 team playoff. Though I seriously doubt they'd survive the 1st round.

Wait a minute here, so Missouri was #1 in the nation this week. I understand they lost, but how in the living hell are they not in a BCS bowl but Kansas is....a team that Mizzou beat?? Is it because Mizzou lost twice (both to Oklahoma), while KU only had 1 loss (to Mizzou)? That in itself is crazy talk, as Mizzou "earned" to play that extra game they lost yesterday.

Oh, I love how KU also had the 109th toughest schedule out of 119 D1 teams....and there only win against a ranked team was Kansas State who was #24 at the time.
Mizzou was 26/119.
Hysterical.
P.S. I hate Missouri, but damn, they got screwed.

The one argument against Mizzou is that they had two shots at beating Oklahoma and they couldn't get it done either time. Kansas only lost to Mizzou once. I don't think it's a particularly good argument, but oh well.
The rankings are pretty arbitrary anyway. That don't measure who is the best team now, or who is the best team over the season. It measures what made the fewest mistakes late in the season. Mizzou made a late mistake and got punished.
It is amazing that Mizzou was #1 and West Virginia was #2, and after they both lose (Mizzou with the better loss), W. Virginia is still in a BCS game and Mizzou is not. But that's because of the way the system is set up - West Virginia still won their conference, so they are gauranteed a spot, but each conference is only allowed 2 spots at most, so Mizzou gets squeezed by Oklahoma being in (obvious) and Kansas.
You know what's really interesting? In Conference tournaments in basketball, they rarely effect the seedings for March Madness, but they have a huge impact on the BCS. So odd...

True.
But in college basketball they have the greatest playoff system in all of sports to compensate for any injustice there might be in the rankings. Man, I love March Madness.

I think you meant "the greatest playoff system in all of college sports." As great as March Madness is, there are usually a couple of strange decisions on which teams to include. The NFL system is as close as it gets to perfect. Everyone's on a level playing field during the season with equal chance to qualify, the match-ups are adjusted after every round to benefit the higher-ranked teams, and the Super Bowl is played on a neutral field.
Anyway, this is quite possibly the worst championship game I could've possibly imagined. I guess I'm the only one who would've preferred West Virginia vs. Missouri. Stupid West Virginia and Missouri...

Personally, I think Oklahoma vs. LSU would be a far better game, I can't see how Ohio St has a chance, especially with over a month for injured LSU players to get healthy again. It's going to be a massacre.

Nah. That's not what I meant.
It may not be a PERFECT system, but it is the most exciting.
Anyway, this is quite possibly the worst championship game I could've possibly imagined. I guess I'm the only one who would've preferred West Virginia vs. Missouri. Stupid West Virginia and Missouri...
You'd be delighted over a WV/Missouri game? Really?
I'm not going to pretend that my Tigers are the perfect team to be in the BCS Championship game, but it's going to be a heck of a lot better than what we were looking at two weeks ago.

Without even considering my significant preference for football over basketball, I still don't think the NCAA tournament is as exciting as the NFL playoffs. IMO, the road to the Final Four and, in particular, the first weekend of games are far more exciting than the Final Four itself. Where the NFL crescendos to the Super Bowl with more and more excitement each round, March Madness seems to fizzle out in the latter stages.

Really (and not just because I loathe LSU and don't feel much better about OSU). If we have to crown the worst "national champion" in the last 20 years or so, it would at least be nice for it to be a first-time champ. After years and years of having to exclude some deserving team from the title game, now we have no deserving teams. I certainly can't get excited about seeing either of these teams collect title number 2 (or 1.5, as it were) in the last few years with the effort they've given. It'd be nice to see the "little guys" duke it out on the big stage. I don't even think I'll bother watching this game.

I couldn't disagree more. The sad thing is that this season had a chance to be the most exciting in the history of college football... if we had that p-word. Hot teams that didn't lose two weeks ago like Georgia, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and USC would be in the mix and the field would be wide open. Instead, we get the state champ of Ohio -- proven on the field sadly as part of a schedule even Hawaii would call easy -- trying to get to that magical third OT. Can't we just crown last year's Boise State team as this year's champ?

This year was probably one of the most entertaining collage football seasons. I've actually enjoyed it more then the NFL. I'm hoping LSU wins, but they have not looked very over-powering late in the season and Ohio State may be too much for them to handle. I'm rooting for LSU but we'll see
