I'm slightly farsighted, apparently. Add a small dose of astigmatism, and I'm in the need for some spectacles. I was told that the fact I was straining all day in order to achieve 20/20 vision is almost definitely responsible for the headaches I've been having.
And I don't want to wear contacts. The thought of one of them slipping "behind" my eye, like I've seen happen to my friends, is enough to make me squirm. Also, I really don't think I'd mind glasses at all. I'd kind of like the change, honestly.
I said all of that to ask this...
For those of you who wear glasses (or have friends/family who do), do you know of the best places I could go to get some nice stylish glasses without paying an arm and a leg?

Don't forget to pick up a cane and your social security check while you're out.

Believe it or not, Wal-Mart ahs some nice and affordable rimless glasses.
I got myself some as a backup pair, and ended up wearing them all the time.

Wal-mart. They have some nice glasses there. Your medical insurance will probably pay for some of the cost of the glasses. I need another pair myself.

I wore glasses from '79-'90. Contact lenses from '90-'00. LASIK in '00. I loathe glasses and contacts.
But, I am certainly seeing some deterioration in my near vision. I have switched from 1/10th scale hobby RC to 1/18th scale and I am having some major problems seeing some of the tiny parts when working anything but very bright lights.
Looks like I'll be donning the old man glasses soon.
Cane will follow.
I don't drink prune juice, but we eat a lot of prunes in the house. They're like big raisins. My daughter would rather have them than most cookies. We make a big deal out of them like they're some special treats.

Indeed! What's sad is that my wife has been telling me the same thing for over a year.
A MacNN member tells me, and I go get my eyes checked.

Hope you enjoy death, despair, and slitting your wrists.
Or are you just trying to pull off the Rob Bell look?

I have the exact same thing... slightly long sighted. When I use screens for a while (and I do for 16+ hours a day), I get nasty headaches. I also need a very slight Prism too :/
In the end, after breaking many pairs of cheaper but stylish glasses, I snapped.... Bought myself a pair of Oakley frames. Never had any problems at all with them, and look as good now as they did in the beginning.
Also, I did eye exercises for a few months, and it fixed the problem amazingly... I now need my glasses very infrequently. Did the opticians recommend any that may help you?

Nope, nothing at all.
Is there some reading material I can pick up to help?

If your insurance covers vision, see if there is a provider directory for places they'll pick up the cost.
I used to dread contacts like you do, but if you wash your hands and keep the lenses clean, they're 1000X better than glasses. Most places will let you try a set to see if you like them. Lenses for astigmatism get more comfortable every year, couldn't hurt to try.

The optician just explained to me that I needed to do, but I think if you type 'eye exercises' in to Google or wikipedia, there is a fair bit of info out there.

Generally for people who don't need a strong correction, laser surgery is not recommended. Over correction can occur. That is the doctor over corrects and you end up with worse vision.
Believe it not, Lasik is not a one and done surgery. I've known many people who got it, so they can throw away their reading glasses only to find out a few years later they need to don those reading glasses again.

I don't mind wearing glasses it all - it gives character to your looks.
Besides, it'd look butt-ulgy without glasses, with glasses I just look ugly

Back on topic, my fiance wears contacts, and there is NO WAY I would stick my fingers in my eyes to put them in and take them out all the time. Thank God for great vision (for now).

Whoa! How'd I miss that?
I know you were just making a joke, but it's PAINFUL ADMISSION TIME™!!!
When I first watched one of his NOOMA clips, I was like, "Man, he's really pulling that cool glasses look off. I wouldn't mind wearing glasses like that."
That's it. I'm done. Pity me.

Glasses are not a sign of age. Needing them and not getting a pair is a sign of immaturity and lack of reality. Reality is what we all have to deal with. Like, MP's are great for photographers and a pair of glasses really don't work when trying to compose a subject in a viewfinder. Therefore, I am mature and I wear a camera viewfinder with camera and lens attached over each eye. Does anyone know of a really sturdy nose bridge support that will hold 5 or more pounds?

Somehow I just had an inkling...
My girlfriend's family owns the whole NOOMA series so that they can loan them out to anyone that wants to use them.
