3) Background Location - Nav apps can read directions right over your music. If app needs GPS location, since that drains battery, Background Location uses cell towers to tell app you have moved.

4) Push notifications - nothing new here

5) Task completion - i.e., You can start a Flickr upload, then leave the Flickr app and your upload continues in the background.

6) Local notiications: another kind of push

7) Fast-app switching - No need to relaunch the app, restore the state and everything has been preserved as it was

Folder is auto-named based on the genre of the apps. Tap to expand, tap an icon to launch. Pretty easy and cool looking. You can dock folders too.

Tentpole? What is it with the media not knowing about sexual euphemisms? I'm half expecting something about tea bagging.

Tentpole #4: Adding iBooks to iPhone OS 4. Looks just like it does on the iPad. Same iBookstore too.

And pages stay synched between your iPhone and iPad (wirelessly), just like Kindle App.

Game Center...

Social gaming network allows you to challenge friends to games (they'll get a notification), automatic matchmaking considering ability

Worldwide leaderboards. Achievements. It's a preview in iPhone OS 4, and it's "available for everyone later this year."

There's an app for that.

Correction - someone needs to come up with an ad blocking app that can run in the background.

So if they put an ad up every 3 minutes (OMG NO!!!!!).......

The ads keep you in your app

"Nobody clicks on ads that they know will launch Safari. But iAd is in the iPhone OS itself, so it puts the ad content right over the app. Users can return at anytime"

Apple will sell the ads and host the data. Developers get 60 percent of the revenues

Ads are done in HTML5. LOL

They should insert ads into your phone conversations. Like if you are calling your wife from the grocery store, your iPhone could interrupt your conversation to suggest buying pop tarts.

I wonder if they can build in support for iAds into special iPhone mobile versions of websites... or into streaming tv shows on the iPad... this could actually be a huge deal...

Looks like they may be firing back at Google big time...

following the ars live feed, it sounds like iAds could be a better ad experience for those apps that are going to put in ads anyway. The developer makes the decision -- Apple isn't going to take over x amount of pixels on apps -- so I'd prefer a consistent and better experience vice what we have now.

Before the call will connect, the two parties have to listen to an ad.

So no unified file folder... no built in turn-by-turn gps system...

Otherwise, pretty good. Nothing mind blowing, but some much needed updates.

How sad is it that I am most excited for... folders?

Wow, no multitasking for the 3G. I guess it's too slow? Or is it the victim of marketing?

Did they say that the iPhone OS 4 would be available for iPad at same time? I assume it will be but did they explicitly say that?

My cynical nature says it's a marketing victim, but then I'm reminded of how many times I launch an app on my 3G and have to wait before I can start text input or interact in some way. So they might actually be telling the truth about the process/system being too slow.

I think you're right... some apps feel sluggish as it is. Take those video recording apps, for example - I have yet to record anything more than a slideshow.

The iPad OS announcement will probably have some new stuff that trumps the iPhone stuff.

We'll probably be seeing the two one up each other for years.

A few small things I wanted to see...

Home screen widgets... NOPE
Ability to remove Apple Apps... NOPE (but we can stuff em all in a folder)
Ability to lock the screen orientation... NOPE
Dynamic Icons (like on the calendar) for things like weather... NOPE
FIX SMART PLAYLIST LIVE-UPDATING!!!!! -- PLEASE!

Some of these might be in there but too small to mention.

While it's good to see Apple add a lot of this stuff, it seems like they also left some out. I was really hoping for homescreen widgets, or some implementation similar to that. At the very least, I wanted dynamic icons. Seriously. Why is it always 73˚? My very inexpensive LG enV touch goes beyond that. I'm also curious about battery life. Steve said they wanted no impact, which makes sense. But if I'm running Skype, Safari, and Pandora at the same time, there HAS to be some sort of battery life impact. Would it be like running just Skype, which is a battery hog anyway? Or like all three?

I should say "lock-screen" widgets.

This would be a handy way to glance at information without unlocking your phone. Instead of looking at a picture of your kid or a fish, you would get the option of adding little widget like mini apps that display information such as weather, how many emails are in your inbox, sports scores, your last few notifications, big fancy clocks, etc...

Like on Android phones.

Great point about the video apps. I tried to do a Ustream once and it was exactly like a slideshow.

So can a folder only hold 9 apps? Is that a fact or is that just how many the icon can show?

WTF: No multitasking on the iPad? That must just be an omission, right?

"iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009)."

None of the news sites I've read seem to know. Macworld is reporting that there's no limit on the number of folders you can have, but they don't mention if there's a limit to the number of apps in a folder...
