Did anything go wrong for the Germans? It seemed that every pass was perfect, people were always available - and the Brazilians decided to not bother with defense.
Germany have now had two high scoring games. Wonder if that bodes well for the final.
Oh and no German player had a stupid haircut.

Wow, that was the match of a lifetime.
I watched it with a Brazilian friend of mine. He didn't say anything -- and I didn't know what to say to him. What hurts even more for the Brazilians is that Germany has broken two of Brazilian records during the game:
- Klose is the top scorer now with 16 goals over Ronaldo.
- Germany has 223 goals vs. Brazil's 220 goals in total.
That's like adding mutilation to devastating injury.

If all games had that much scoring, the majority of the US could probably get into it.

Hah...figures, considering it might have been the worst soccer game of the tournament.
NED-ARG was a disappointment of course, but I cannot help but be happy for Messi. Argentina effectively wiped out van Persie (not that he's done anything in the last few games) and gave Robben no space to work with. He missed one great chance near the end (amazing defensive block by Mascherano I think), but otherwise was pretty stifled. Of course, the Dutch did much the same to Messi, but overall my impression was that Argentina had the more potentially dangerous possessions.
I think van Gaal outsmarted himself in the penalties - putting Vlaar first was a mistake. van Persie was already off, but in that instance I think you go with better bets like Robben or Schneider to get your first goal and put pressure on Argentina.
Of course, Argentina's real weak spot was Romero, and he saved Vlaar AND Schneider...pretty awesome story, so maybe it was just not meant to be. Always the bridesmaid, the Dutch....

While I understand this viewpoint, it completely misses what soccer is about!
Scoring might be the most important factor for the result of a game but it is way less important for the joy of watching a game!
There are boring games without goals but there are also very good games without goals!
Games with results like 7:1 are usually rather boring than exciting, because with results like this, there are usually two teams playing against each other which do not play in the same league.
That's why this result was such an historic one - both teams are considered to be among the best of the world and a result like this is then something rather impossible!

The worst game of the tournament? The game was historic and will be remembered in 50 years. As badiea points out, it's exceedingly unlikely that two top teams ever get a score like that.

I didn't think the game was disappointing, it was obvious that both teams' defenses would be able to neutralize the big players from the other team. The joy of watching soccer does not lie in the goals but in teams trying to control the flow of the game.

Well of course it was historic - but it was still a terrible game. Brazil was a shambles and Germany could do no wrong. Certainly historic for the scoreline, epic beatdown in play, and surrounding circumstances, but the fact remains that it was a terrible game of soccer and not one that anyone likely wants to see repeated.

Disappointing outcome - Holland is my team.

I agree, a 4:3 game would have been far more interesting.

There a an image that keeps popping up in my FB feed right now, and it's one of those that is only worth it for the captions:
Portugal has Ronaldo
Argentina has Messi
Brazil has Neymar
Germany has a team

I think our prospects are good, the German team managed to neutralize important players in previous games and the big advantage Germany has is that many players can and do score goals not just Müller and Klose. I don't think it's in the bag, though.

Public viewing in Germany is great, the atmosphere is amazing when the emotions roll across thousands of people. Usually I'd watch the games in a beer garden, but these don't have a tradition in Berlin, though. In any case, your son will have a great time.

On the day before our son got married in Prague in May 2011, I was strolling through the city, and I came upon an area where there were 3 HUGE TVs, and a mass of people watching a hockey tournament match between the US and the Czech republic. It was truly a site! (I did hear some of them remark that the Czech team was missing some key players due to the Stanley Cup playoffs that was also still going on in North America).
But yeah, I suspect my son will have a great time! Fortunately, his wife (my wife and I adore her! She is a wonderful woman, and she comes from a good family) is Czech and German, and has been to Berlin a number of times in the past. She will be showing him around tomorrow, and also whatever any free time they have.

Will Brazil bounce back and claim 3rd? I have serious doubts.

I don't know what you mean. How is this a surprise ?
After the Semifinal, it was clear that Brazil is a weak team. I expected the Dutch to beat them.

So did I but after being 2 up in 17 minutes it looked like they might thrash them. Which would imply that Germany weren't so great, it was more Brazil being dire.
I still fancy the Germans to win, but if Argentina's players step up, they are very much capable of beating them.

I think it's going to be another blowout tomorrow. 4:1.
Argentina has a stronger defense than Brazil, but once you break them with two goals, it's going to be game over.
The only offensive force is Messi. He's no miracle worker any more. He'll get one goal, but that's it. The German defense is going to neutralize him for the most part.

What an awesome game. Absolutely proof that goals are irrelevant to a good sport. Except of course to avoid the penalty-kick extension, which would suck.

Argentina played the game they needed to play and shut Germany down, if they hadn't missed that open shot on the goal near the end of regular play they would have won, but I guess that was nerves. Oh well.

And if Germany hadn't missed that header, they would've won earlier.
Or the two other shots they had. Argentina had another opportunity that went wide.
Saying that somebody "would've won" if they hadn't missed is...well.
The teams were well-matched, and it was a awesome game. Germany put a LOT of pressure on towards the end, though, and came through deservedly.

Nice when you get a game where the momentum swings back and forth a bit. Some good spells of possession though neither side really ramped up the pressure particularly high I thought.
Seemed they were both happy to settle for a shootout by the time Gotze scored.

Yes, that typically tends to happen.
The best and most balanced coverage of the World Cup came from the British papers, I thought. They all did a great job, with The Guardian and The Telegraph offering the best writing.
